First I had this problem, I couldn't get the login screen it brought me to tty so I installed other drivers and did apt-get -f installAnd now I can get to Ubuntu but its very slow and games lag alot right at the menu.The driver is nvidia-experimental-304.Now I want to install an older driver that will work good.


i was wondering has anyone been able to get the 7900 gs agp video card to work with Windows 98. i know there is unofficial drivers for it, but i am curious if someone has actually gotten that card to work in a Windows 98 environment without issues


I strongly advise against using anything newer than a 6800 in win98. Even the 6800 has issues - especially if it's one of the late 512MB DDR2 models. 7xxx drivers are buggy and cause lots of compatibility and performance issues in win98, not to mention BSODs and other weird happenings.


OK, and there is no logic. Why exactly against newer than 6800? A problem with 512 mb? I thought everybody knows it and even didn't say about it. Of course it is necessary to use 256 mb only versions, it's like 2x2=4 for Win98. And 6 or 7 generation doesn't matter here!If you could say that "strongly against newer than FX 5950GT" I would understand it because it is latest and fastest native AGP chip.But you said "strogly against newer than 6800" and I don't understand it, sorry. Some possible issues which may be typical (by the way I don't know them) for 7800/7900GS/7950GT will be the same for 6800GS/GT/Ultra too and nothing more. Therefore if any user is satisfied with 6800 he will be excited with 7900. I say again: unofficial version 82.69 is working wonderfully.


In case anyone is still looking for Geforce 7xxx W9x drivers, here's the link to download the BFG unofficial ones. I spent about an hour in the Internet Archive before I could find an archived page that wasn't broken.


I found numerous issues with games running a 7 series card under win98 (tested with 7900 and 7600 AGP) among witch crashes to desktop, system freezes and BSODs. Also some older games are not a fan of the new cards. Dungeon Keeper II runs on the 7600 AGP, but has the black screen bug on the 7900. Black and white displays artifacts ingame. This is a driver issue, as the same artifacts are present on the 6800 - BUT you can use older drivers with the 6800, and it will work fine in B&W - the problem is the working drivers do not support 7 series cards. Sacrifice freezes after 5 mins of gameplay on both 7600 and 7900 agp cards. Again, a driver issue. Same thing happens on the 6800 with the same drivers, and again, works fine with older drivers witch do not support the 7 series. Unreal gold also freezes at one point during gameplay.


The problem is not with the cards themselves, but with the drivers. I never said the cards don't work, but getting them to work is a pain in the ass and even after all the work most of my favorite games won't work well on the card + 8x.xx drivers I got the card working with.


If you want to prove the 7 series cards run well in win98, show us what drivers you're using. I really really hope I'm wrong about the cards acting up in win98, and my experience is based on me fucking something up, but i have yet to be proved otherwise. A link to the drivers you used to get it working perfectly as well as the system you used it on would be wonderfull.


So I am looking at a build with a 925XE chipset and single core prescott EE P4. Trying to do a dual boot XP / 98SE. The board I am pondering has PCI and PCI-E only. Thank you for the archival links above. Will they work on PCI-E versions or only AGP? I've not bought a video card yet, but would like to make the best selection for both intended purposes. Was this debate ever settled about 7800 or 7900 working well on 98SE?


I will say will be not imposible but to hard or to stress to get that hardware run on win98se , i try many diferent ways to get 7900gt working but the drivers not install properly at the end of any attemps , allways finalize with diferent errors , exclamation signs on device manager, windows boot problems etc...


This card was promoted by several hardware enthusiasts as "the last high-ended AGP card in existence". It has 16 pixel shader units instead of the 20 that the 7800 GT has, but still benefits from the optimizations of the other 7-series GPUs enjoy. Clock speeds are 375 MHz for the GPU and 1200 MHz for the (GDDR3) memory. According to all benchmark tests, the performance of this card is faster than the GeForce 6800 GT and GeForce 6800 Ultra. Different vendors may deviate from the stated specification. It serves to provide a great upgrade path for those with high-end AGP systems who don't want to switch to a new high-end PCI-Express system.[11]There was a special "Golden Sample" release from Gainward that was called "7800 GS+" or officially "Bliss 7800 GS 512 MB GS+" that had default clock speeds of 450 MHz core and 1250 MHz memory. Unlike a standard 7800 GS, the 7800 GS+ actually used a 7900 GT GPU that had the full 24 pixel shaders instead of the regular 16 pixel shaders that are normally found on a 7800 GS video card.


Gainward had previously released a "Bliss 7800 GS 512MB GS" card that was based on a 7800 GT but utilized the AGP bus. Its external appearance and name make it nearly indistinguishable from the 7900 GT-based Bliss 7800 GS 512MB GS+. Leadtek produced a similar card with 256MB memory.


According to PC World, the 7800 GTX was "one of the most complex processors ever designed".[citation needed] The GPU had 302 million transistors (the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ CPU has 233.2 million transistors), along with 24 pixel and 8 vertex shaders.[12] It was succeeded by the 7900 GTX on March 9, 2006.


Replacing the 7800 series, Nvidia's 7900 series was a product refresh and not a new generation of Nvidia's GPU, running at 650 MHz. Officially, this series was meant to support only PCI Express Interface but some companies released AGP versions.


Introduced during the fall of 2006, at a MSRP of US$199,[15] the 7900 GS filled the gap between the mid-end GeForce 7600 GT and the high-end GeForce 7900 GT. The card was unofficially launched August 23 by woot! as a white box OEM. However, the product's company, MSI, made claims that these cards were stolen from MSI during transportation and sold to woot!.[16] The referenced MSI customer notice has been changed to remove explicit references to woot!. As of March 2007, Nvidia had discontinued production of a number of GeForce 6 and 7 series products, including the 7900 GS.


The GeForce 7900 GS has 20 pixel processors, 7 vertex processors, 256-bits memory bus, and comes clocked at approximately 450 MHz/1320 MHz for core/memory, which should provide slightly lower performance than the 7900 GT. The GeForce 7900 GS is powered by the graphics chip code-named G71, thus, shares the same advantages as the G71 did over its immediate predecessor G70: dual-link DVI outputs, reduced power consumption, higher performance.[17]


This video card was released on March 9, 2006. Like the 7900 GTX, it uses the G71 GPU that is produced at 90 nm. It too offers all the features of the 7800 series as well as an attractive performance-to-price ratio.[citation needed] 2ff7e9595c
